Today's Portobello Road bargain... and Penguins!

...was a Huawei wireless modem hotspot thingy like this:

Which I got for a quid used. Seems to charge and power up, not sure how to test it beyond that. What I'm wondering now is if it's locked or not, and if it is how I go about unlocking it. There's no SIM, of course.

Any ideas? Or should I take it to a phone unlocking place or something?

Also - penguins! One of the links in an article I was editing on fanfare.org

and another I added

You might consider signing up to FreedomPop and see if you can get a free data SIM from them to try out the Huawei mobile hotspot device. I think they're going to start shipping them in July.

They're offering 200MB of data, 200 minutes phone, 200 texts a month for free. Anything over those limits incurs charges.

Another idea is to take it along to the next Tun and see if any of the gadgetheads will let you try their data SIM in it.
