My hub is downstairs and my desktop computer is upstairs, and I was finding speeds upstairs over wi-fi about half what I was getting on my netbook downstairs. Last week invested in a set of homeplugs to run a network over my mains and that seems to have upped the speed upstairs. Also means I can connect my Sky box directly to the internet which gives me a few extra goodies. For a start, having failed to notice Only Connect had restarted this week, I can download it from the BBC iPlayer to my Sky box, instead of having to watch it on my netbook connected to my TV.
