I think if it was set in the same timeframe as Peter's origin, the 1960's, being a female interested in science, and stuff, it would be harder on her, as "That's not what proper women do." The last of the misogynist era.
And yes, a casual google brings up a ton of gender bent Spider-Man fanfic.
