Can anyone tell me why Firefox now saves every PDF I open to downloads, even if I don't want to save it? REALLY annoying since I average about 50 a week, mostly postal labels and receipts that are loaded only to be printed out and aren't needed again, instruction manuals for cameras etc. I'm selling (or, quite often, that turn out NOT to be the right one for the thing I'm selling), stuff I'm reviewing, etc. Anyone know how to fix it?

Update - apparently firefox previously saved every PDF in a temporary folder which possibly doesn't exist any more (the site isn't clear on this) but they changed it to saving everything into the downloads folder instead because this makes it "easier" for users to delete the files. I can only assume that they are opening a LOT less PDFs than I am, and have nothing else in their downloads folders.

Aha! I've just noticed a load of pdfs in my downloads folder.

I just got a Firefox Beta update, which adds an about:config setting, browser.download.start_downloads_in_tmp_dir, to fix this. It doesn't default to on, and I haven't tested it yet and don't know when it'll be rolled out to people who aren't on Beta, but I'm making a note of it so I can look up the name if I need it again. (No, I don't know how I got onto Firefox Beta, either. I didn't ask to be and there are too many updates.)
