Am I being unduly cynical in listing brass knuckles, a jack knife and a .38 automatic with explosive bullets on the character sheet for a romantic heroine?

Ought to finish the last adventure tonight and the end notes etc. tomorrow! YAY!!

Historically - and based on a display at the Royal Armouries about the protections carried by lady travellers in the 19th century - it'd more likely be a .22 with regular bullets... Otherwise, no that was actually pretty normal for that context.

At the Royal Armouries they've got a couple of cabinets with not only these weapons, but special ladies' luggage, presentation cases, purses etc designed to carry them!

Excellent!

The setting here is more an alien equivalent to gold rush Alaska, hence the heavier weapons. In the stories on which the game is based several characters (including some of the heroines) carry flame pistols, which are insanely powerful energy weapons. I think a .38 is relatively restrained - and yes, she does have normal ammo as well as the explosive bullets.

.38 ACP was not a particularly successful automatic calibre, not very common. .38 was much more used in revolvers. The small .32 auto was more popular, from the Colt Model 1903 Pocket Hammerless on. Smaller still but perhaps more popular was the .25 ACP, used in the Baby Browning, Colt Model 1908 Vest Pocket and others. You'll see a lot of these in hands of the femmes fatale in film noir.
There is also .380 ACP, heavier and also known as the 9mm Short/9mm Kurz/9mm Browning. That is a fairly common automatic pistol round and used in a lot of automatic pistols, Walther PPK and so on, but you are looking at mid-30s on in Germany and later copied around the world. Quite popular for guns designed for concealability.

OK, this is set in 2115 so I think I can assume that .380 is available, I'll say it's that. And a gun designed for concealability is what I have in mind.
